Get on your bike

Schloss Zermatt Outdoor 321A7662

SCHLOSS Zermatt is an ideal starting point for your bike ride. If you’re bringing your own bike then we have a secure bike storage room with a cleaning and servicing station. If you’d prefer to hire then there are plenty of good places in town for this (we can get you a 10% discount at most so come speak to us at reception). Regular bikes and e-bikes are both available.

Zermatt: a 70km Eldorado of biking trails

From relaxed going-with-the-flow cycles, to technically challenging high alpine trails, Zermatt has a ride for everyone. What’s more, if you’d prefer skipping the climb then you can easily take the ride up on Zermatt’s mountain lifts (to trails such as the Drover Trail, Glacier Garden, Mark Twain, Rock’n’Roll (Lauberen) and so on.).

Beginner bike rides

There are some great bike trails to practise on, such as the Hobbit, Zermatt Täsch, Flowtrail Sunnega, Höhenweg, Moos Trail and YoYo. If you don’t want to go hell for leather from the start, you’re best off exploring the Sunnegga/Rothorn area first. Its easy trails and lakes, which provide the perfect place to stop for a break, are ideal for beginners.

Looking for a challenge?

The Matterhorn side of the mountain (Schwarzsee) will tick your box, with tours passing really close to the iconic peak. The ascent is an adventure in itself and, at some points, you’ll need to carry your bike. The forest tracks take you above 3,000 metres and guarantee a great panoramic view. If you want to go alone, head to Hörnlihütte which has a challenging single-trail descent and all the EWS stages. Or, if you’re done with Zermatt’s trails and routes, visit the neighbouring Cervinia in Italy.

The ultime biking thrill

You’ve heard of heliskiing, but have you heard of helibiking? In Zermatt there are three designated mountain landing sites exclusively used by Air Zermatt for helibiking. Helibike tours departing from the landing pads at Äschihorn and Alphubel traverse glaciers, necessitating the need for a mountain guide. A guide isn’t mandatory for the landing pad at Unterrothorn.

Don’t forget to fuel

If you’re going from Sunnegga to Findeln, take a tour of three restaurants for your lunch: starters with a Matterhorn view at Restaurant Findlerhof, mains at Restaurant Othmar's and sweets at Restaurant Sonnmatten.

Other good mountain restaurants to stop off at include:

  • Chez Vrony, Paradies, and ze Seewijnu in Findel
  • Hermetjie or Schönbielhütte in Schwarzsee
  • Restaurant Furi or Blatten in Furi
