How to relax in Zermatt (non-skiing activities)

SCZ CLAW Yin Yoga

While Zermatt is synonymous with lung-testing ascents and high-cadence trails, the mountain has quieter gears too, and plenty of things to do for non-skiers.

Whether you’re looking for active recovery or a complete digital detox, here is how to find your FLOW in Zermatt when the pace slows down.

1. Find balance: our CBD & Adaptogenic Spa 01

Wellness at SCHLOSS Zermatt is about returning the body to its natural state of harmony. Our CBD & Adaptogenic Spa utilises the soothing properties of plant extracts and vital mushrooms to encourage deep, systemic calm. A highlight for many is our floating bed which creates a unique sensation of weightlessness to quiet the mind.

Hotel guests have full and unlimited access to the spa, while day guests are welcome to book a massage or a revitalising facial, with full access to our pools, saunas, and refreshments included with treatments.

2. A moment of suspension: the Charles Kuonen Bridge 02

The Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge offers a fresh perspective on the valley. Stretching 494m across the Grabengufer ravine, this free-to-access path provides a beautiful walk 85m above the ground. It is an ideal spot to pause and take in the panoramic views of the Weisshorn and the Matterhorn in the clear summer light.

3. Go to new heights: the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise 03

Take the cable car up to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise - Europe's highest mountain station at 3,883 meters. The air is incredibly pure and the views are vast. From the 360-degree viewing platform, you can see 14 different glaciers and a skyline of 4,000m peaks. Between the ice palace and the cinema lounge, there’s plenty to do, whatever the weather.

4. Travel back in time: the Matterhorn Museum 04

Located in the heart of the village, the Matterhorn Museum (Zermattlantis) is an underground treasure. You can see the original equipment from the first Matterhorn ascent of 1865 and get a fascinating look at village life and the history of mountaineering. The collection includes historic items from the Neolithic and medieval periods, and an archive of climbing equipment used throughout the years.

5. Creative evenings: Vernissage Bar and Kino 05

Vernissage is a staple of Zermatt’s cultural scene. Part cinema and part lounge, the space was designed by local artist Heinz Julen and features plenty of leather armchairs and iconic chandeliers. You can enjoy a slow cocktail as the sun sets behind the mountains, or book a ticket for a range of different films including current blockbusters, cult classics, local documentaries and child-friendly screenings.

6. Cool waters: Lake Leisee 06

Lake Leisee is a beautiful destination for a summer swim, a family picnic at the BBQ areas, or simply sitting by the shore to enjoy the alpine flowers. The water is clear and provides a perfect mirror image of the Matterhorn. With a beach and a children’s playground, this is the perfect spot for family-friendly activities in Zermatt.

7. Shhhhh: Zermatt’s library 07

Located almost directly opposite the Parish Church of St Mauritius, the Gemeindebibliothek Zermatt has been part of the village’s fabric since 1731. This public library holds a collection of over 5,500 items - ranging from contemporary literature to rare mountaineering guides and documentaries. Spend an hour tucked away with a newspaper or a local history book, or bring your laptop if you need to work while in Zermatt.

8. Golden hour: sunset at a Matterhorn Viewpoint 08

As the sun dips lower, a golden light transforms the Matterhorn into a glowing, copper monolith. Various viewpoints allow you to witness this cinematic shift in stillness. It’s a meditative experience that’s a perfect bookend to a summer day, requiring nothing more than a seat on a wooden bench and a few moments of your time.

9. Swing away: Matterhorn Golf Club 09

For those who find their FLOW on the greens, the Matterhorn Golf Club is a game of total immersion. Located in the lush valley between Täsch and Randa, this 9-hole course (which can be played twice from 18 different tee locations) is framed by some of Switzerland’s most formidable peaks. The terrain is surprisingly flat, allowing you to focus on your game while surrounded by the beauty of an alpine summer.

10. Treeclimbing: Forest Fun Park 10

If your version of relaxation involves a sense of play, the Forest Fun Park is a different way to experience the outdoors. With 25 zip lines and a variety of high-rope obstacles woven through the canopy, it gives children and families a unique perspective on the local flora and a refreshing break from the traditional hiking trails.

While you’re here… Hamlets and villages worth visiting near Zermatt

Beyond the main village, Zermatt’s landscape is dotted with historic hamlets, pockets of time where sun-blackened larch wood and quiet chapels tell the story of the valley. If you’re looking to explore the traditional side of the Valais, these nearby outposts are essential stops:

Zmutt

Zmutt is a living museum of traditional Valaisan architecture, located about an hour’s walk from Zermatt’s centre. With its small chapel and cluster of ancient huts, it offers some of the most iconic, unobstructed views of the Matterhorn.

Along your walk, you can stop by…

1. Blatten & Zum See 01

A short walk from Zermatt village, Blatten is a charming retreat featuring a mountain chapel and a renowned restaurant. Continuing towards Furi, you’ll find Zum See, a tiny hamlet famous for its historic dark-wood buildings. Both are perfect destinations for a slow lunch followed by a gentle descent back to SCHLOSS Zermatt.

2. Furi 02

Perched above Zermatt, and accessible by hiking trails or cable car, Furi serves as a gateway to the high mountains. Beyond its cosy mountain restaurants, it provides easy access to the dramatic Gorner Gorge, where you can feel the power of the glacier water and marvel at 220-million-year-old rock formations.

3. Randa & Täsch 03

For a change of pace, a short train ride down the valley leads to Täsch and Randa. Randa is the starting point for the ascent to the aforementioned suspension bridge, while both villages provide a peaceful alternative for those looking to explore the valley floor’s meadows and larch forests.
